GoMo, Salt, Swisscom, Sunrise –
German-speaking VS French-speaking regions,
EU usage… Everything you need to know!
When you move to a new country, there are a few things you have to take care of right away. And the one thing that will make your life easier the fastest?
Getting a local mobile plan!
And here is the good news:
You don’t need a Swiss bank account to open a mobile plan right away.
You can pay with a foreign card, and once your residence paperwork is done and you open a Swiss bank account, you can always switch the payment method later. Totally fine!
Since mobile plans are one of those things where cheaper is usually better, I spent way too much time running comparisons and digging through different Swiss providers.
Out of all of them, I ended up choosing GoMo’s unlimited monthly plan.
GoMo is a relatively new brand (launched in 2021), so there weren’t many detailed reviews out there — which is why I’m sharing my experience here.
(I’ll go through the major providers first, and share my GoMo review at the very end. If you’re only here for GoMo, feel free to scroll all the way down 👀)
At the same time, my husband is using Salt’s unlimited plan, so I was able to compare the main Swiss providers side by side.
Major Mobile Providers in Switzerland in order of Network quality and price ranking💸
- Swisscom (nationwide)
- Sunrise (mainly German-speaking regions)
- Salt (French-speaking regions)
- GoMo (French-speaking regions)
Swisscom and Sunrise are dominant in the German-speaking part of Switzerland, which is geographically much larger than the French-speaking region. Naturally, they’re more widely used across the country.
Salt and GoMo belong to the same parent company.
You can think of Salt as the main brand and GoMo as its low-cost version.
Since Salt originally grew in the French-speaking region, it’s especially popular in Geneva, Lausanne, Fribourg, and nearby areas.
1) Swisscom
Swisscom is Switzerland’s leading telecom provider.
- Coverage: 98–99% nationwide
- Works well even in mountain areas and remote regions
- Very reliable when using public transport
Subscription Plan
Swisscom is the most expensive option among all providers.
Basic unlimited plan : Blue Mobile S: CHF 69.90 / month
Includes :
- 1GB per month in Germany, France, Italy, Austria
- 100MB per month in other countries
- Minimum 24-month contract (12-month contracts exist, but pricing varies)
2) Sunrise
Sunrise performs effectively in most cities and suburban areas, but in mountainous regions, it tends to be somewhat weaker compared to Swisscom.
It mostly grew in the German-speaking region, making it less commonly used in French-speaking Switzerland compared to Swisscom or Salt.
One significant advantage is the wide variety of plans available to suit your needs.
Subscription Plans
If Swisscom seems too pricey and you reside in a German-speaking region but are not entirely confident in Salt, Sunrise presents a reliable middle-ground option. Sunrise is cheaper than Swisscom and has plans tailored for:
- Swiss residents
- Students / under 27
- Neighboring countries
- Europe-wide use
Unlimited data & calls plan : Swiss Travel+ : CHF 39.90 / month (fixed price)
Includes:
- Unlimited data & calls in Switzerland, Germany, Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, Austria, Liechtenstein, and Greece
- 3GB/month in other European countries, plus the UK and the US
🎓 Are you under 27?
There’s a youth plan called “Swiss Connect Neighbors Young” for just CHF 34.95, offering the same benefits — plus you’ll get 50% off the Swiss Half Fare Card.
Being young truly comes with its perks in Europe! 😌
3) Salt
Salt is predominantly found in the French-speaking region and is quite common in Geneva, Lausanne, Montreux, Fribourg, and more.
In these areas, it is likely the second most prominent provider after Swisscom.
My husband is currently using Salt. He travels frequently for work across Fribourg, the French-speaking region, and Bern, and overall, the service has been quite reliable.
- Strong signal strength in urban areas
- Occasionally weaker in the mountains, but still usable
- Generally reliable overall
If you’re looking for a more affordable option than Swisscom, reside in a French-speaking area, and frequently travel (including outside city centers), Salt is an excellent choice.
Subscription Plans
Salt provides highly flexible plans based on your desired EU usage:
- No EU data
- 1GB
- 4GB
- Unlimited
If you rarely leave Switzerland, you can get very cheap unlimited Swiss-only plans – Basic unlimited Swiss plan Start Max: CHF 14.95 / month
Includes:
- Unlimited in Switzerland
- No EU data
Other EU options
- Swiss Max: CHF 22.95 – 1GB EU data
- Swiss XXL: CHF 25.95 – 4GB data, 100 call minutes, unlimited texts
- Europe DATA: CHF 29.95 – 20GB high-speed EU data, then unlimited
- Europe XL: CHF 34.95 – 10GB high-speed EU data, then unlimited + unlimited calls & texts
4) GoMo
GoMo is Salt’s budget-friendly sub-brand, and it’s the one I’m currently using — so this part is based on personal experience.
What I like about GoMo :
- Setting up a SIM or eSIM is entirely online and very simple.
- The website is user-friendly and intuitive. You can :
- Monitor your usage
- Manage your subscription plan
- Easily contact customer support
- Specifically designed with younger users in mind(I think)
Customer service is provided through live chat with real agents, and their response times are impressively quick.
Pricing is comparable to Salt’s lowest plans, but with the added benefit of EU usage included.
I used GoMo for about a week in Brittany, France last month.
It connected through Bouygues, and the signal was solid both in cities and rural areas. (Data, call, and SMS limits do apply.)
Downsides of GoMo :
GoMo only offers two plans, so your options are limited. More importantly:
- Signal can sometimes drop, even in urban areas.
- Despite being a 5G plan, there are times when it feels slower than stable 4G
Most of the time, hotspotting to my laptop works fine and daily use is not a problem. But connection drops do happen:
- In city centers
- In rural or mountainous areas
- On public transport
In short:
- Fine for personal use
- Not great if you rely on your phone for urgent business calls
If your main concern is price and you’re okay with some occasional frustrations, it’s actually a pretty good deal.
Subscription Plans (2 options only)
Plan 1 – GoMo+ : CHF 14.95 / month
- Unlimited in Switzerland
- 3GB EU data
- No calls or SMS included
Plan 2 – GoMo Europe : CHF 19.95 / month
- Unlimited in Switzerland
- Up to 20GB high-speed EU data, then unlimited
- No calls or SMS included
Final Summary
Price is not a concern; you want the best coverage everywhere (Germany/France, EU, mountains):
→ Swisscom
You live in a German-speaking region and are looking for a more affordable option, as a student or someone under 27:
→ Sunrise
You live in a French-speaking area and are often on the go, need reliable calling, are indifferent to EU data, or are seeking flexible EU options:
→ Salt
You reside in a French-speaking area and require light usage with minimal travel, occasionally needing EU data:
→ GoMo+ or GoMo Europe (select based on your EU data needs)
One last important tip ⚠️
No matter what provider or plan you go with, always make sure to find out if the price is time-limited or a lifetime deal.
Some plans look great at first, but after a year or two the price can suddenly shoot up 😬 Lesson learned: always check before signing up 🙂
